The past weekend I went to Abu Dhabi to visit my friends and we visited Sheikh Zayed Mosque for Friday prayers.
I have to admit that I had to keep my eyes closed during the khutba and the prayer so as to not be distracted by its beauty.
It is just… unbelievable.
Read the wiki article for more info… and for photos, check out the photo album I uploaded.

Be stunned and enjoy.
Wow amazing architecture. I keep thinking whether or not they “over did it” here. But i guess this is a great thing to leave the generations to come.
Wow! Simply magnificent!
never seen anything so amazing!
mashallah, that’s reallly something!
wikipedia confused me. in the same article, it said it is the 3rd largest mosque and in another paragraph, they said it is the 6th largest mosque. :S
Mashallah! What a splendid feat of architecture! Totally breathtaking! I can tell you this since I am a Civil Engineer. I mean, look at its floral marble designs, tall minarets, and giant pillars. And now ever since tours of the mosque are allowed to non-Muslims (just like the Omayad Mosque in Damascus), tourists are flocking to this spectacular place.
However, I am glad that they are forced to cover themselves completely (black-clad) since you don’t want to see inappropriate attires in such a holy place.
KJ: You did great job of capturing the splendour of the place… but I have a question:
I couldn’t help but notice the amazing clarity of your camera and the depth of field in the pictures of your blog. Do you have a digital SLR or are you using a normal compact camera? And regarding those close shots- what is the size of the aperture lens? Care to share a trade secret? Lol

I think they overdid it a bit but at least this time it does look good.

It is, isn’t it!
7aki -
It was quite an experience to be there

Yup

That’s why it is open to public LOL
Correct it then

It really is a piece of art. I’ve never been that awestruck honestly! Regarding your question, I use the Canon 400D and the 17-70mm Sigma. Aperture depends on the shot. Any one in specific?
It’s the ugliest architecture i ever seen in my life! the collage of many pieces from here and there was the killing term of the mosque’s design.
Anyway, it’s satisfying many tastes of people who would love to see golden and shiny parts everywhere to feel the fake Luxury.

If anyone goes to any mosque for the sake of enjoying any form of luxury has got their priorities wrong
the pictures are just amazing mashallah..
specially the flowers on marble and the main gate , mashallah very beautiful ..
the pictures are amazing ,mashallah great views specially the main gate and the flowers on marble ..
mashallah very beautifull
It is really beautiful ! I loved the walls and floors with their floral patterns but I think it was over done ! the money they spent on all this could’ve been donated or used to build other mosques !!
i agree. but for me, in any mosque i visit, i would like to keep my eyes open while praying and not being distracted by ugly designs and shiny ornaments.
oh beautiful! wow it’s so nice! Amazing ..etc, are just a feelings of fake Luxury, and far a way from the original purposes of Mosques’ designs.
Simplicity is the new enemy of the Arabian Tastes.
Not to be disagreeable
, but I don’t like all the little domes on the outside. I like the inside especially the decorated columns, but I can’t help but think what a waste to put all that money on a mosque. Oh well, I guess there are worse things he could have spent it on.
Money Money Money
Always Funny
In a rich man’s world!
Wow mashalla it looks amazing.
