Story of Stuff

Many people I know are TV junkies – and although I never considered myself a TV junkie, I do like to watch little clips from the web thanks to YouTube and Miro.

I came across this video and I really liked it because it is quite unlike most of the stuff you see out there. This is an eye opener on how “stuff” comes about and goes. The presentation is simple and innovative which makes it fun to watch.

It is 21 minutes long but I seriously urge you to watch it.

Oh and by the way, the next edition of Moogle Thoughts will be a special edition so don’t miss it!

Indeed man, despite your slightly pessimistic view. But when it comes to money, as long as a business gets clients they won't see a reason to stop what they're doing. If we as consumers stop buying stuff we don't need then they will stop producing stuff we don't need.

Hey I'm sure I left a full essay on this topic. Damn, seems it didn't get published right. :/

Anyways.. all I said in short, everything she said is true but I don't understand why americans always seem to make a problem out of nothing. That is life. Yes they're polluting the planet and yes they're exhausting its resources but that's how life is and that doesn't mean there are no other studies to end this. Why the fuss about it? Instead of asking us, consumers, to ease up on buying stuff, let there be regulations to limit the evolution of production.

The main problem I have with the concept of free speech is that the phrase is abstract and up to individual interpretation. What one sees as free speech does not mean it is also free speech for someone else. The word "free" itself has many inherent and contextual meanings that I sometimes find it difficult to talk about free speech because the concept itself is not concrete!

So with that in mind I don't know what kind of free speech people would be importing with technology, and I don't see the video putting anyone in jail. What I really do hope though is that the user manual is well written!

You are right, I second you. I remember a story from a famous gentleman from middle east describing those leaders like rats, if you take them and put them in castles and bring them high quality food and dresses, they will run away and live in the sewage where they used to live in, they can not change their habits. So, instead of learning from other countries, they prefer to do the same mistake. For example, they do not put latest stringent standard on car emission they go to the most polluted one.
The big problem will be in the future as I tried to convey, just imagine that if they imported the technology and did not import free speech with it, that is mean they could put you in prison for a video like this, what disaster those countries could end to in a small period of time.

Ms Loala - You are right. Unfortunately in the ME, especially Gulf countries, there is a belief that wasting stuff is not a bad thing. People growing up with lots of money at their disposal don't really always give a damn about what happens with the discarded stuff. Thankfully though the world is shifting mentality

Qu - It is depressing but brooding over the past won't let us progress. The world is going green, and as cheesy as it is to jump on a bandwagon, this is a bandwagon people would want to jump on. I will be posting more videos I get from the net on diff matters :)

saint - The UAE is the 35th most globalized country in the world and the 1st in the Middle East region. People of the third world don't have much options because of their financial crisis and natural disasters, but this doesn't mean the "educated" people should be abusing those factors. Of course I am speaking a bit naively here, but I just find it amusing when 6 billion people agree on one thing and their nation leaders - which can be counted on a few hands - have their mind set the other way. If an alien from space comes and looks at how the governemnts are operating I don't think they'd invest time in alien invasion and would go to some other planet
  • saint
Kj, it is a fastidious video, however some educated people in the third world start catching phrases as anti-globalization and they have no real power or means in stopping the SYSTEM, so in my opinion you should have put a disclaimer goes like this:
For third world countries, please do not adopt any part of this video but you should take it as a whole including free speech and citizen empowerment)

    Thanks for sharing. Good stuff

That was fantastic ... Excellent choice to share ...and very depressing in it's own ways.

Thanks... I enjoyed watching it, learned many things and completely agree with it ...
  • Ms Loala
That is a hard slap for the cheek!

It can be accomplished if many people cooperated, but here in the middle east especially, they are much influenced and refuse to be educated in such way!

    What a shame.
